They did it their way

Dog Waste Management's Doe and Mike Miklosovic.

If Doe Miklosovic is pooped at the end of the day, it is no wonder. She and her husband Mike are the owners of Dog Waste Management, a company that, as the name suggests, eliminates the task of picking up outdoor dog waste.

Toting sturdy scoopers and driving their signature Volkswagen cars they call "dung beetles" to each site, they eagerly dig in. After scooping up that day's dog waste, they dump it in secure double bags, then spray their shoes and tools with a veterinary-grade disinfectant.

"This is a dream job for us," says Doe. "We both worked indoors at office jobs before my husband began this company four years ago. Now we are outside every day doing very enjoyable, environmentally sound work."

With so many couples working outside the home, the Miklosovic client list is steadily growing. They scoop eight-to-ten hours a day during a five-day work week, and charge $7.50 a week for one dog, plus $4.00 for each additional dog. Seniors and people with guide dogs get a 10% discount.

"This job isn't for everyone, but it is something we hope to do as long as we are able," says Doe. "There is nothing like being your own boss, and, no pun intended, this is an on-going business."
